COURSE CONTENT
This venepuncture course is written in line with the CH132 National Occupational Standards for Obtaining Venous Blood Samples which have been written by Skills for Health for the NHS, so you can rest assured you will learn everything you need to know to fulfil the requirements of any future employers. This includes:
- The roles and responsibilities of a phlebotomist.
- Familiarisation with a variety of equipment.
- Best practice techniques to collect blood safely and successfully.
This one day course has been developed to most effectively teach you what you need to know to fulfil these standards, with an emphasis on practical, hands on training. You will also receive a comprehensive course handbook, that you can keep as a valuable reference tool as you continue to grow your experience.
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
Anyone can learn to take blood. We have trained:
- Doctors
- Nurses
- Health Care Assistants
- Paramedics and EMTs
- Biomedical Research Assistants
- PhD students
- Beauticians
- Even dog breeders!
- But most importantly, our courses are designed for all absolute beginners interested in a new career in health care.
REFRESHER
If you already have clinical experience, and just need to refresh your training, you can book onto the refresher course. This means you would just need to complete a preassessment test, and then attend the afternoon for the practical elements of the course.
Please note: You will get one attempt to complete the preassessment test. If you fail to achieve a passing mark, you will be asked to attend the whole day, and will need to pay the difference.
EQUIPMENT
You will practice venepuncture using training arms, and vein blocks strapped to a partner, before having the chance to practice on your class mates or trainer (requires additional purchase of the Live Bloods Experience).
TIMINGS
This is a 1 day course. There is a lot to squeeze into one day, so please be prepared for a long day. The course starts at 09:30, and, depending on the size of the group, can continue until 17:30 or 18:30.There may be additional time required at the end for the Live Bloods Experience.
OPTIONAL LIVE BLOODS EXPERIENCE
Competence for these courses are assessed by practicing venepuncture on vein blocks and training arms. However, because our training centre is based in a GP surgery, we are able to offer the opportunity to take a blood sample from your fellow students or the trainer. This relies on enough students to volunteer, as well as increased health and safety considerations, and therefore a small additional supplemental payment is required if you want to take advantage of this opportunity. Getting that first blood completed in a friendly and constructive environment is an invaluable experience that will give you the confidence to take more bloods going forward.
GROUP SIZES
Group sizes are kept small, to get the best 1:1 experience with the trainers. Minimum group size is 2. Maximum group size is 8.
ACCREDITATION
All of our courses are provided by our sister company iN phlebotomy training, and are accredited by the CPD certification service, which means they are internationally recognised as part of your portfolio of training. This course counts as 10 CPD hours.
REFRESHMENTS
Lunch and refreshments will be provided throughout the course. Kettle and microwave facilities are also available. Please let us know if you have any dietary requirements.
